Thoughts ahead of the 2024 Presidents Cup
The 2024 Presidents Cup gets underway this week at Royal Montreal Golf Club in Quebec. Here are some thoughts I have ahead of the tournament.
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER…WILL HE DOMINATE?
We’ve reached a point with Scottie Scheffler where he’s a storyline whenever he tees it up. How will he look this week? I assume he’ll play a minimum of four sessions and wouldn’t be surprised if he plays all five. Can he go 5-0 this week and continue his unreal 2024 season?
KEEGAN BRADLEY…WHAT’S HIS ROLE THIS WEEK?
Keegan Bradley enters this week as a Captains pick on Jim Furyk’s squad. The interesting thing about it is that he’ll be the Ryder Cup Captain next year. He was initially named a Vice Captain for this year’s team but had it taken away from him due to being a Captains Pick. However, I can’t believe that he won’t at least be doing a little bit of Vice Captain type work to get a good start on building next year’s team. It’ll be interesting to watch Bradley in the sessions that he doesn’t play to see how involved he is.
MAX HOMA AND BRIAN HARMAN
Whether it’s the Presidents Cup or the Ryder Cup, there will always be controversy over the Captains picks for the U.S. team. At last year’s Ryder Cup it was the “boys club” who got their way as Captain Zach Johnson selected Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, and Justin Thomas, all of whom are good friends with him as three of his picks. The Spieth pick was justified as he was 8th on the qualifying list. However, Fowler and Thomas were below the top-12, which made things a bit controversial.
For this year’s Presidents Cup, Captain Jim Furyk used his six Captains picks to select the players that were 7-12 on the qualifying list. Is it reasonable? Sure. But two of the men who got selected are Max Homa and Brian Harman, both of whom aren’t in amazing form.
After a terrific 2023 and a hot start to 2024, Harman has just one top-10 finish since March. Homa had a T3 finish at The Masters and a T8 in May before disappearing from the leaderboards.
Did they do enough over the two years to get themselves into spots on the team? Yes. But if they don’t perform well can the choice to take them while being out of form be questioned? Also yes.
CAN THE INTERNATIONAL TEAM FINALLY WIN?
The last time the International team won this tournament was in 1998, when Tiger Woods was a ROOKIE alongside 2024 United States Captain Jim Furyk. The Internationals in 1998 were led by guys like Ernie Els, Greg Norman, and Vijay Singh. So yeah….it’s been a long time since the International team has won this event. The United States holds a 12-1-1 advantage all time in the tournament. The lack of parity in it has led to lots of discussion about it becoming a mixed event. Even United States Solheim Cup captain Stacy Lewis called for it to be a mixed event a few weeks ago. An International team loss probably sparks more of that discussion. An International win probably keeps the tournament in its current form for at least a few more years.
CAN ADAM SCOTT LEAD THE INTERNATIONALS TO VICTORY?
Obviously based on the last portion of this piece it would come as no shock that Adam Scott, an Australian, has never been on the winning side of the Cup. Scott has been on every International team since 2003. His only non-losing result was the tie in 2003. There’s probably no one who wants this more than Scott, who’ll be making his 11th consecutive appearance. Can the Aussie be the leader on the course this week and finally collect a Presidents Cup victory?
