Breer: Drake Maye in unhealthy situation for young quarterback
On Friday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Albert Breer explained why Jerod Mayo is in a tough position with developing Drake Maye.
Maye Development Plan
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Hardy: What do the Patriots do with Drake Maye? What’s the solution?
Albert Breer: I talked about this last night on TV. The Patriots coaching staff expect that Drake Maye will play this season. I don’t think that they’ve put a time on its line on it. I think the idea would be that he plays the last month of the season, or maybe at some point in November. At that point, the hope would be that you have things developed to the point where you can manage things.
This is sort of a multilayered thing where. The Patriots can manage things a certain way by putting him in comfortable situations. They do run some stuff he’s comfortable with that crosses over with the stuff that he did at North Carolina. They’ve been creative about ramping him up.
You’ve heard the 30 percent number. They’re doing this thing in practice. When the starters are working on the team period and Jacoby Brissett is very comfortable with the play, they’ll pull him off the field. Subsequentially, they’ll substitute Maye into the play. That’s how they’re doing it. That’s the benefit of having Brissett having had experience playing for Alex Van Pelt the year before. He doesn’t need every rep in practice.
They’re also doing things like cutting the scout team reps in half. Maye uses the other half of the time to work with quarterback coach T.C. McCartney. This is all to ramp him up to get him ready to play. And they’ve also been heavily leaning on the run game.
Here’s the problem. If you can’t control the score, that will be an issue. You can say “Just go and lose the games,” but that will be a problem. Say the team is down 28 to 10 in the third quarter and they’re 3rd and 14. What if they run a draw to protect the young quarterback? How do you think the rest of the locker room will process that? And how much more difficult do you make things on Jerod Mayo if you’re doing things that way?
Fred Toucher: Yeah, you’ve got a first-year coach trying to set is trying to set and establish a culture. To be in, you know. So like I just.
Breer: Based on last night, it’s clear they can’t control the score or down and distance. I don’t see this as a healthy situation for a young quarterback to be in.
