Marc Bertrand: The Clock is Ticking on Jacoby Brissett
On Monday’s edition of Zolak and Bertrand, the guys reacted to the Patriots 23-20 defeat at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks. In this discussion Marc Bertrand made the point that the clock is ticking in Jacoby Brissett as the starting quarterback of the New England Patriots due to his miscues at the end of the first half, and the quarterback’s inability to find his receivers in the team’s passing game.
Watch It Here!
“If You Have a Slightly Better Quarterback, You Win Yesterday…”
Bertrand: The Pats are now 1-1.
Zolak: They didn’t make enough plays to win this game. You hear (Jerod) Mayo after the game and he talks about, “this game really comes down to a play, or two”. That’s what it is in the National Football League, and that decides whether you win or lose. I go back to the game against Cincinnati (Bengals) and I look at the clock and it was 6:10 left in that game. I said, “Bob, this is the critical part right here, this is where they got to be on point. This is where communication’s got to be good”. This one, they only had two timeouts left and it’s you versus that clock. In Cincinnati, they perfected that. They ran the clock out. They did what they had to do. Opposite here yesterday. It was six(minutes) and change left in that game, and I’m looking at that clock again. You got the ball. What are you going to do? You get a nice run, a really nice run by (Antonio) Gibson. I thought this was the game, that particular sequence. But you know, the inability to get the ball to the receivers. Yeah, they run on first, then run on second, and then you have a long drop back where he’s (Jacoby Brissett) holding the ball at third, and that’s the one spot he can’t take a penalty. You can’t have a sack. Jacoby Brissett knows that. Yeah nine years in this league for Brissett, and that is the cardinal sin right there.
Bertrand: I’m glad you bring that up because that’s worthy of a lot of discussion. But I just want to say this off the top, we are two weeks into the season, two games in and this team is is leaps and bounds more interesting than I ever thought they would be.
Zolak: They’re likeable team.
Bertrand: They won their first game. They fought hard and came up short in an overtime loss in the second game. I would say through two weeks, my oh my, we have a football team and football games to talk about, which is great. That’s great that the team looks like this through two weeks. We’re midway through September and this is interesting again, which is awesome. I also think that you’re talking about a play in the game with a quarterback that’s been in the league for nine years and he knows better.
Zolak: That’s the reason he’s been given this opportunity, right. They don’t want to put Drake (Maye) in that position yet, because we’re going to bring the veteran in to manage these games and keep us in them.
Bertrand: I think the clock is ticking on Jacoby Brissett. I think what you want to focus on, and a lot of people want to focus on today is Jerod Mayo, Alex Van Pelt, decisions in game, or penalties. I think it comes down to this. This roster is not good enough. If you have a slightly better quarterback, you win yesterday. If you have a slightly better offensive line, you probably win yesterday.
Zolak: Yeah.
Bertrand: That to me is what this boils down to.
Zolak: Smith outplayed him (Brissett). Geno Smith outplayed Jacoby Brissett.
Bertrand: Yeah. Not even close.
