Albert Breer: Robert Kraft’s HOF campaign has been the worst kept secret in the NFL
On Thursday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Albert Breer of SI and MMQB touched on Robert Kraft’s Hall of Fame campaign being the worst secret in the NFL.
Pushing too hard can backfire…
Marc Bertrand:
We’ve got all kinds of phone calls on the line about it and that’s related to the Hall of Fame discussion surrounding Robert Kraft. Curious to get your thoughts on that story yesterday and what stands out to you and if you think Robert Kraft will soon be in the Hall of Fame?
Albert Breer:
I think there was a little piece of that story that was important that I don’t know how much you guys have pulled it out, which is that separating these guys from the coaches, it should help Robert Kraft. Robert Kraft definitely deserves to be in. Does he deserve to be in over Mike Shanahan? I don’t know. I mean it seems like Mike Shanahan’s offense is like being run by half the league right now, you know? So, who’s had a bigger impact? I think being separated from the coaches really helps. Look, this has been the worst kept secret in football for the last few years. The story that Don wrote, people who have been around Hall of Fame people, they know that this sales job has been going on for quite some time. I think in my experience, is that a lot of times when you push really hard on things like that, it can backfire because people get sick of hearing from you. It’s not going to be a deciding factor, but if there’s a close call, they may say the hell with that and I’m going to go with the other guy. I’m not even blaming Stacy James. I think Stacy’s doing his job and he’s really good at his job. But I do think sometimes when the push is a little too aggressive, you’re going to get pushed back from people, especially when it’s an owner where things are so gray on the whole thing. One thing that wasn’t in the story is like the timing of everything, right? So, you had those owners that got in with Dan Rooney, Jerry Jones, and Pat Bowlen. I think that there was a good chance Robert Kraft was going in the year after Bowlen and then orchids of Asia happened and I do think there were some people on the committee who were like, we can’t put them in this close to that having happened. Let’s just wait a year or two. Sometimes when that happens, a guy can get lost in the shuffle a little bit. So, I think the timing of all that was an issue for Robert. Then the aggressive push from the Patriots organization to get him in and not being transparent about some of those things probably hurt him as well.
