Perillo: Hard not to feel good after week 1 win over Bengals
Paul Perillo of Patriots.com joined Felger and Mazz on Wednesday and discussed the Patriots week 1 upset over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Felger: How good should we feel about that win?
Paul Perillo: I don’t really think there’s a whole lot of bad things to say about the win on Sunday. It’s funny, we were walking out after the postgame show and I was like, āwow, you know, like I didn’t have to exaggerate anything like they really played wellā. And I know that part of it is probably perception because of just how clunky everything looked all summer. You know the bar was really low, especially offensively. And they went out and they played pretty clean, they didn’t turn it over. They didn’t commit a lot of penalties. They ran the ball obviously effectively with Stevenson and it looked a lot better from a structural standpoint than I think a lot of people would think. And I think we kind of got excited about it.
Felger: Overall I know your thoughts on the running game, but letās just do it here since we’ve been talking about it today, how important the running game is. If you’re building around the running game, winning games on the ground….your thoughts on that?
Paul Perillo: Yeah, I just think it’s hard to expect them to win a lot of games the way they did Sunday. I thought they played really well and there weren’t a lot of glaring errors, but playing that game 16 more times? I think you’d be hard pressed to win more than five. I just think defensively, they were really good, but the other team was really bad too, and sometimes even when you play it that well defensively, the other teams going to score some points. You know they’re not going to fumble as they’re crossing the goal line and the game is different.
