Holley: Why is Deion Sanders so sensitive with the media?
On Wednesday’s Toucher & Hardy program, the guys react to Deion Sanders’ recent clash with college football reporters.
Deion Sanders Clashing with Media
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Michael Holley: This is no fun. Things are no fun with Coach Prime. Why? It’s because Coach Prime doesn’t want to play the game. How about the clause in his contract where he doesn’t have to talk to everybody?
Hardy: He doesn’t have to talk to every reporter?
Holley: Yeah, they settle on a mutually agreed upon media contingent. So, if he doesn’t want to talk to Jon Wallach or Hardy, then he doesn’t have to.
He can talk about the huge platform and all this stuff and he’s taking the high road, he’s not. What I never anticipated with Coach Prime is how sensitive he is. He’s one of the great trash talkers in the history of sports. He had some of the most memorable lines as a player, whether it was baseball or football. And in this position, he can’t even deal with 104.3 The Fan. He can’t deal with the CBS in Denver. And he’s just soft. I never thought that would be the story with Deion Sanders.
Hardy: And the story became so obvious when he became hung up on all this stuff in his first college coaching job.
Holley: That’s right, Jackson State. He said to the media then, “Don’t call me Deion. Call me Coach.”
Hardy: He reasoned that an NFL reporter would never call Bill Belichick by his first name. But, in fairness, most grown adults call each other by their first names. You’re a grown adult asking another grown adult a question at a press conference. He’s not coaching any reporters. He’s not a high school principal. So, you shouldn’t have to address him as “Mister” or “Coach.” He’s not a doctor.
