Phil Perry: Patriots are coming off their “most physical camp” in years
On Friday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston explains the Patriots outlook for Week 1 after their most physical training camp in years.
People are assuming this is going to be a softer team…
Scott Zolak:
It’s going to be fun to see who steps up to make plays offensively. How much more is going to be carried with Rhamondre Stephenson. Can the offensive line gain confidence together while blocking in the run game? If you’re not going to be great pass protectors, can you be great run blockers? Can you win in other ways? They need to figure out what that is going to be. Then sink your teeth into what you know works and what doesn’t work.
Phil Perry:
What’s interesting is that vibes are good, but I want to be clear in what I’ve heard in terms of how those vibes have been generated. I think a lot of people are assuming this is going to be a softer, kinder, warmer, fuzzier locker room and overall facility with Jerod Mayo versus Bill Belichick. I do think personal relationships are going to matter more, call it what it is, with this regime. I would not say that this has been an easy camp. In fact, I would go the other way and I would say some of those names that I just mentioned in terms of guys that really like Jerod Mayo and how things have gone would tell you, thank god we had a week off before Week 1 of the regular season because we were beat up. That was a tough camp in terms of the running they’re expected to do, in terms of the full contact hitting that they did at times during the practices. I mean, you guys were out there, you saw some of it. That was a more physical camp than we’ve seen in years here in New England. They are driving these guys hard when it comes to the conditioning, which we’ll see how that plays out Week 1 for them. In the weight room, Mayo has been open about how they want to be a tough team, and that’s where it must start. His brother Deron Mayo is actually running the weight room now. He’s the head strength and conditioning coach and they’re still doing a lot of the things that they’ve done when this was considered a really hard place to work.
