Patriots add tackle to practice squad
The Patriots signed offensive tackle Caleb Jones to their practice squad on Tuesday.
With tackle depth still a concern heading into Week 1 of the season, the Patriots added at the position on Tuesday. That addition came on the practice squad, with the signing of Caleb Jones.
Jones, 23, is in his third year in the NFL after going undrafted out of Indiana in 2022. The 6-foot-9, 370-pound tackle spent his first two NFL seasons with the Packers, mostly on the practice squad. Last year Jones appeared in one game in Green Bay, playing one special teams snap.
This preseason Jones played in three games for the Packers, primarily at left tackle. He allowed just a single pressure and wasn’t penalized in 81 total snaps. Jones was released by the Packers during final roster cuts last week.
Prior to this signing the Patriots didn’t have a primary offensive tackle on the practice squad. They do have three guards – Michael Jordan, Liam Fornadel, and Jerome Carvin – and a center – Bryan Hudson. Jones adds tackle depth behind the tackles on the active roster – Vederian Lowe, Caedan Wallace, Chuks Okorafor, Demontrey Jacobs, and potentially Mike Onwenu if he’s not playing guard.
The Patriots had a full practice squad prior to this signing. To open up a spot the team released defensive end Brevin Allen, who they had signed last week.
