Zolak: Drake Maye is already elevating the Patriots roster
Scott Zolak, Tim McKone and Joe Murray discuss whether or not Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye is already starting to elevate him teammates around him with his play in the preseason:
McKone: Robert Griffin III says having Drake Maye behind center could elevate the rest of the roster because they know that they have to kind of step up with the young kid in there.
Zolak : Well, that’s kind of what’s been happening through two games, right? They look better when he’s in there. I mean, what had KJ Osborn done prior to that, prior to him and Maye breaking down and making a play, that was great. It’s the state of where you’re at right now. the reality is you had to keep seven receivers because you don’t really know who your receivers are yet. You’re waiting for guys to step up, make plays like. That’s a step forward for Osborn last week. I like that. That’s good. I need to see more of that.
Joe Murray: I think Drake Maye is the right guy for this team. But the timing and the way that the paths are set up, they just can’t do it, it’s almost their own fault.
Zolak: But it’s just so much change, Joe. Like it’s head coach, front office, even on the front office was here, but it seems like it’s different thinking and choosing, it’s just wiping the board, clean, quarterback and everything. I don’t think they wanted him to be ready yet, but usually talent just starts to take over and I think that’s kind of snuck up on them.
Joe Murray: Do you think he can play behind this offensive line with his mobility?
McKone: In terms of the two quarterbacks, Drake Maye does have the skill set to deal with that offensive line better than Jacoby Brissett does.
