Marc Bertrand: The concern with Alex Van Pelt and Eliot Wolf vs. Jerod Mayo
On Tuesday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Marc “Beetle” Bertrand explains why Alex Van Pelt and Eliot Wolf could be a problem for Jerod Mayo.
This is what you need to worry about…
Marc Bertrand:
You know what you have to worry about with this team?
Scott Zolak:
What’s that?
Marc Bertrand:
That the offensive coordinator is closer to the GM than the head coaches. That he was a hire of Eliot Wolf and he’s got the ear of Eliot Wolf and they are in on this plan together to have Jacoby Brissett here. Alex Van Pelt wanted him. Eliot Wolf went out and got him. The head coach seemed to indicate that he really wanted it to be more of a competition. He wanted Maye to have a start here in recent days based on what he said. But he’s flip-flopped all over the place with the things he said, so it’s hard to know what he actually thinks. But for Jerod Mayo, if he means that, he might like the idea of starting Drake Maye. I don’t think it matters because I don’t think it’s up to him. And he might have the head coach of the offense in the ear of the GM, which means the GM and offensive coordinator are in lockstep with Jerod Mayo locked out of the equation. Then that conversation is not meaningful, because whatever Jerod Mayo says will be heard but won’t be acted on. That dynamic is interesting.
Tim McKone:
I think that’s a real possibility too. If you’re Jerod Mayo, you would want to win games as the head coach. Get off to a good start. It’s Eliot Wolf that I think would probably want to rein that in and slow play a little more.
