Patriots sign two edge rushers ahead of final preseason game
The New England Patriots added depth on the edge on Tuesday, signing Kobe Jones and Chris McCarroll.
Between injuries and trades, the Patriots edge depth has been tested in this final week of training camp. As the team gets ready for its final three practices before the preseason finale, they made two additions to address that need on Tuesday.
According to Doug Kyed of The Boston Herald, the Patriots signed defensive end Kobe Jones after hosting him for a workout. Additionally the team is also signing defensive end Chris McCarroll, per NFL insider Aaron Wilson. McCarroll also worked out for the Patriots.
Jones, 26, has been on NFL practice squads since entering the league as a UDFA out of Mississippi State in 2021, and appeared in two games with the Green Bay Packers in 2022. After getting cut by the Carolina Panthers last summer he signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL and played in six games this summer.
McCarroll is a UDFA who was an All-American at Division-II Grand Valley State last year. He’d previously been in rookie minicamp with the Colts.
These signings come as the Patriots have been stretched thin on the edge in recent days. In addition to trading Matthew Judon, the team has been without Joshua Uche and Oshane Ximines in recent practices due to injuries.
With Jones and McCarroll signed, the Patriots’ roster is back full at 90 players.
