Patriots reportedly trading Matthew Judon for draft capital
Matthew Judon is on his way out of New England.
As first reported by ESPN’s Jordan Schulz on Wednesday, the Patriots were “close to finalizing” a trade that will send Judon to the Atlanta Falcons. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network later confirmed the trade, adding that the Pats will get a third-round pick back in the deal. Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald confirmed that the third-round pick is in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Judon, 31, played just four games for the Patriots in 2023 before a torn bicep knocked him out for the season. Prior to that, he had made four straight Pro Bowls from 2019-22, and in 2022 finished ninth in Defensive Player of the Year voting. In total, Judon racked up 32 sacks and 62 total quarterback hits in 38 games with New England.

With Judon gone, the Patriots’ outside linebacker depth chart is now topped by Joshua Uche and Anfernee Jennings. Uche has flashed as a pass-rusher (11.5 sacks in 2022) but has not consistently produced. Jennings is a more well-rounded player that should provide solid play against both the run and the pass. But it’s unlikely either will approach the heights of Judon in his first two seasons with the Pats.
Judon’s contract became a hot-button issue as the off-season went along, and came to a head two weeks ago when the linebacker had animated exchanges with Patriots brass on the field during a training camp practice. Judon spent one day away from team facilities, then returned and had been an engaged participant in practice on the days leading up to the trade. It’s unclear if his move to the Falcons will come with a new contract.
For edge rushing production, the Patriots may have to lean on second-year pro Keion White. He’s had a strong summer and could be in line for a big season with heavy usage. He’ll be needed, with Judon now gone, on top of the loss of defensive tackle Christian Barmore due to blood clots.
