Marc Bertrand: Alex Van Pelt doesn’t want a QB controversy
On Monday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Marc “Beetle” Bertrand explained why Alex Van Pelt is scared of a QB controversy.
They’re scared to play Drake Maye…
Marc Bertrand:
I was explaining this to someone who was a casual fan yesterday, he said. “Who’s the offensive coordinator now?” I said it’s Alex van Pelt. “He wasn’t here last year, right?” he said. No, he got fired in Cleveland. He said wait, the guy that runs the offense now was the guy who got fired by the Browns. I said, correct. Yeah, that’s the guy who runs the offense and he’s got a defensive minded coach with not a lot of experience dealing with offensive coaching, so he probably has free reign. He doesn’t really have much pushback from his head coach and his boss. He runs the offense now and his meal ticket for lack of a better word to success is Jacoby Brissett. And Brissett had a great day yesterday here in camp, he dazzled again. He’s looked great throughout this camp. He didn’t play much himself on Thursday night. But he’s going to be the starter, I think that’s what the team has signaled this entire training camp that he is the starter, and we are treating him as such. He’s the guy Van Pelt needs right now. For the time being, until he needs someone else. But he’s not about to have a quarterback controversy. He won’t allow for it. That’s why they buried Drake Maye, and they were afraid to play him Thursday night. They’re going to be afraid to play him again this Thursday night. Can’t have him look good. If the kid shows out and looks good, will their plan of adjusting his feet and making sure the feet match the upper body and all the reprogramming they want to do this year, that crap goes out the window if the kid just goes out and flashes. So, they can’t have him flash. They need to have him play his one series, his seven snaps and go back to the sideline. Night is over. Fans go home disappointed. It’s all anybody wanted to see in that game was Drake Maye. He is the 3rd overall pick; you can’t even see him in a preseason game. That stinks, but that was predetermined.
Scott Zolak:
I got fooled.
Marc Bertrand:
It was predetermined that Drake Maye was not going to play in that game.
Scott Zolak:
Jacoby has control of that room right now. He is so comfortable and relaxed. And to his credit, it’s a great approach he’s taken because he knows the writing on the wall. He knows what he’s structured to do. It’s a one-year deal for 8 million. I get a chance to go play, maybe get another deal with somebody. He knows he is here to teach him how to be a pro. He is doing it all and he is comfortable doing it.
