Has Jayson Tatum’s stock taken a hit in the 2024 Summer Olympics?
Chris Gasper of The Boston Globe joined the Felger and Mazz program on Friday and discussed the latest with Jayson Tatum and Team USA in the Olympics. Has Jayson Tatum’s stock taken a hit due to his role in these Olympics?
Chris Gasper: In terms of Tatum….complete non-factor. I mean that’s what it is. And I don’t expect it to change in the gold medal game. I don’t think he’s going to have a Steph Curry game or any of that. He didn’t play against Serbia in the group play game, he didn’t play in this one. He was the 11th guy off the bench against Brazil in the quarter finals. He’s a complete non-factor and frankly this participation in the Olympics has diminished his brand a little bit. I think this is a guy people were looking at and saying “he’s the next guy when LeBron’s gone”. It’s like “Tatum’s the face of the league”. Well, you can’t show up at this thing and get benched and then be the face of the league. And now his mother is talking on social media and is a little bit upset about it. You know, I understand. I mean she has a point, but that’s not a great look for Tatum either.
Chris Gasper: This whole thing was supposed to be basically a coronation, a victory lap for him, and really it’s been the opposite. And I’m sure he’s frustrated. And it is a little strange too. I mean, I thought against Serbia this second time, man, if there were ever a game where like Jaylen Brown had a point that you needed him on the roster, they needed better wing defense with a little more size, but you could also make that case for if there were ever a reason to say, “well, you have to at least give Tatum a shot”. His ability to be a switchable defender there I think could have helped them and at least give him an opportunity, but he is just entrenched as like the 11th man on this team.
