Murray: Brayan Bello has no mental toughness
The Boston Red Sox picked up another big win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night, but it was another interesting outing for starter Brayan Bello. On Wednesday’s Felger and Mazz, Jim Murray gave his thoughts on Bello and how he lacks mental toughness.
Jim Murray: Brayan Bello. I don’t trust him. And I can’t be alone in saying I question his mental toughness. It doesn’t take much for this kid to fall completely off the beam. 5th inning, when it’s 3-1, the second out is a shot down the first baseline, which Dom Smith actually for a tubby guy makes kind of an athletic play, gets turned around and Bello has to run to first, they get the second out. Then Bello comes back to the mound and it’s like the gathering of the masses. In comes Wong, the infield comes in, and they were saying to the broadcast like, “oh, he’s just trying to get his breath”. Like, dude, how? How old are you. And at that point I thought, I wish I wasn’t so lazy, I would’ve got my phone and made live bets, I go “he’s going to implode” and he imploded. Next batter, home run. Then a Bobby Witt single, all of a sudden. Bing bang boom. It’s a 3-3 game. It doesn’t take much. We’ve seen his before Mazz, you so much as breathe on Brayan Bello and it all goes to crap for this kid. No mental toughness.
Mazz: When Bello did get back on the mound, and Murray’s right, home run, single, double, walk, Cora came out and yanked him. Like that’s the other thing is Cora saw it because he’s seen it before. Cora said, “here we go. Here we go. It’s coming apart. He’s losing it fast. Getting him out of there.”
