Marc Bertrand: I was wrong about the Jacoby Brissett signing…
On Monday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Marc “Beetle” Bertrand explained why he was wrong about the Jacoby Brissett signing.
I liked the Jacoby Brissett signing at the time…
Marc Bertrand:
You’re all a little late to the party, but now you’re now seeing it the way I am.
Tim McKone:
Brissett has a command of the offense. Brissett knows what he’s doing. Van Pelt certainly has a comfort level with him, and that’s great by the way. And for the short term, that’s probably the best for the team this season. But long term, is that going to benefit the Patriots? It’s all about Drake may.
Scott Zolak:
No, it’s what Ernie Adams said when he sat there with Edelman. We played that clip like you’re married to Drake. The organization is married to Drake Maye now.
Marc Bertrand:
Alex Van Pelt isn’t.
Scott Zolak:
He’s got to prove he could call place and make it right.
Marc Bertrand:
Yeah, no kidding. You’re exactly right. Which means what? How do I prove I can call plays? How do I prove that I am worthy of being handed the reins at 54-years-old for the first time in my career where a team has just told me it’s yours? It’s your baby. It’s your offense. It’s your play calling. Go ahead. How does he prove himself? He’s not going to do that with Drake Maye. Drake Maye is a rookie. Drake May is not going to fully understand it the way that Brissett does. Drake Maye is going to make mistakes, and that’s OK. That’s what rookie quarterbacks do. But he’s not going to be afforded that opportunity or that investment of time and reps in these practices because they’re setting it up for Jacoby Brissett.
I really like the Jacoby Brissett move when they made it and thought he’d be the perfect guy to bring in, and now I realize how wrong I was to think that. It’s providing Alex Van Pelt a blanky. It’s his blanky.
