Patriots fans are sick of yearly offensive rebuilds
On Monday’s Zolak & Bertrand program, the guys admit the New England Patriots’ offense is going through yet another rebuild.
Another Patriots Reboot
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Bertrand: Tom Curran and Phil Perry were talking about the impatience of Patriots fans regarding the offense. And it’s fair because fans have had to watch year after year after year. The offense is a problem.
There was the Cam Newton offense in 2020. That was followed by a good year in 2021 with Mac Jones, however. That was a year where they were able to sort of put it together. But then the regression in 2022 with Patricia and Judge was a disaster. They weren’t able to get things back online in 2023, even with Bill O’Brien being here.
Now, you’ve got 2024 and you’re rebooting again. Every year. It’s a reboot. It’s been a reboot five years running now for this Patriots team. And people are starting to probably feel a little impatient.
Maybe not as much now as it will be once these games begin. I don’t know if anything is exciting going on in this field so far. It’s only been you know what, five practices?
There’s nothing that sort of stands out and gives you reason to believe. Do you have reason to believe the reboot will work this time?
Zolak: You’ve got to have an impactful draft. The reason they’re in this problem is because you had to go out and get guys in free agency. They had to go get Matthew Judon. They had to go lock down Trent Brown. The offense line was damn good when Dante Scarnecchia was here to motivate Brown.
I trust that the team will always figure out the guard position. And Andrews is so damn solid in the middle. They should’ve kept guys like Joe Thuney and Shaq Mason. So you used to have good guys on the offensive line.
And now you’re trying to incorporate young guys mixed with a couple of old guys and some journeymen veterans.
