The Celtics have signed another big contract extension
The latest contract extension from the Boston Celtics goes to point guard Derrick White.
The Boston Celtics have two key players eligible for contract extensions this offseason. On Monday, they got one of those extensions out of the way.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Celtics and guard Derrick White have reached an agreement on a four-year, $125.9 million contract extension – the maximum value White was eligible to get. Wojnarowski called White’s extension a “huge offseason priority” for the Celtics.
This new contract will kick in starting in the 2025-2026 season. The final year of the deal includes a player option.
White, who agreed to this deal the day before his 30th birthday, was first acquired by the Celtics at the 2022 trade deadline in exchange for Josh Richardson, Romeo Langford, a first-round pick and a future first-round pick swap. He’s since emerged as a key member of the Celtics’ lineup, starting 143 games over the last two years.
Last year, White played in and started 73 games for the Celtics. He averaged 15.2 points, 5.2 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks while shooting 46.1 percent from the floor and 39.6 percent from three in 32.6 minutes per game. After the season white was named NBA All-Defense Second-Team for the second year in a row. White also started 19 games in the playoffs this year, averaging 16.7 points per game on the Celtics’ way to winning the NBA Championship.
With White’s deal now done, the Celtics’ next big extension candidate is Jayson Tatum. He is eligible to sign a five-year supermax, which is projected to be worth over $300 million.
