Mazz: I don’t trust the Celtics
The Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks kick on the 2024 NBA Finals on Thursday night at TD Garden. On Monday’s Felger and Mazz, Mazz discussed how some people, himself included, don’t trust the Celtics based on how recent seasons have ended for them.
Mazz: At the end of the day, this to me comes down to the Celtics. I don’t trust them. I don’t think people trust them. And so until they win, people aren’t going to trust them. They’ve been in the conference finals six times now and this is their second trip to the finals. I think it’s about the Celtics. I think it’s about, you know, having taken the cheese before and that looking at them now and saying I don’t care what the win total is, when they get into a real matchup, and I do think despite what the numbers are, I think it’s a real matchup. Yes, they’re favored. Yes, on paper they’re better, particularly if Kristaps Porzingis plays. All true. They’re the Celtics. They’re the Jayson Tatum Celtics and they have found ways to blow it in the last five or six years.
Jim Murray: And with what you’re saying, on this part I agree….if they were to lose this, I don’t think it’s more about the Mavericks than it is about the Celtics. Them getting in their own way, Tatum deciding for whatever reason, maybe he’s like jealous of Brown getting that MVP in Eastern Conference and saying, “like now it’s my time to shine”, and it becoming too Tatum centric? Yeah if they do those kind of things, they could lose it. But that’s ultimately about them, not about the Mavericks. So again, if you’re asking like just in terms of Vegas favorites, how people feel about them, no, I think they’re properly favored because they’re better than Dallas. They should be.
