Gasper: Dallas is a legitimate opponent for Boston
Chris Gasper of The Boston Globe joined Felger and Mazz on Friday to discuss the upcoming NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks. Some view the Celtics playoff path so far as an easy once, so the guys asked Gasper….is Dallas a legit opponent?
Mazz: Chris, is Dallas a legit opponent?
Chris Gasper: Dallas is a legitimate opponent. And it’s because they have Luka and Kyrie. And I’ll say this, I am not 100% sold on the Celtics having completely solved all of their clutch t0ime issues. I’m very impressed with the way they performed in clutch time and the execution has been exquisite. I appreciate that and they’ve made strides. But what’s the level of pushback? In three of those four games the other team doesn’t have anybody that can really answer you in the clutch going down the stretch. And in the 4th one, you have Tyrese Haliburton dribbling the ball off his shoe. There were a lot of self-inflicted wounds for those teams. So if I think getting into a clutch time game with Luka and Kyrie is a little bit different because to me the biggest advantage the Celtics have had in the clutch, particularly when I look at game four of the Indiana series and their ability to clinch that, down the stretch the final 15 the Celtics scored after they were down 8. 9 of them were scored by Tatum or Brown. 12 of them were scored or assisted by, you know what the other three were, because they won the series on Brown’s assist, and then then final three came from Jrue Holiday. So your guys, rightfully so, dominated in the stretch and the other team didn’t really have an answer. This team, Dallas, they have an answer. They can match you with Luka and Kyrie.
Chris Gasper: So I think ultimately where this series will be decided and won is who’s that third person for the Celtics? It’s Jrue Holiday and I think he’s a much better option as a third person than anything Dallas has in sort of that hierarchy of stars P.J. Washington has been good in these playoffs, but Holiday is better. I Porzingis is healthy, he’s better. I think Derrick White is better. So I think when you get past the top two, that’s where the Celtics real advantage is.
