The Patriots will host at least one joint practice this summer
The New England Patriots training camp schedule will include at least one point practice with the Philadelphia Eagles this summer.
Prior to the release of the NFL schedule earlier this month, ESPN’s Mike Reiss had reported that the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles were working on getting together for a joint practice tied in with their preseason matchup. That planning has now been finalized.
According to Eagles reporter Jeff McLane, the Patriots and Eagles will meet for one joint practice on Tuesday, Aug. 13. That will lead into their Week 2 preseason matchup two days later, on Aug. 15.
Joint practices offer some of the most valuable reps of the training camp and preseason period. It’s a chance for players to go against other players they’re not familiar with after drilling against their teammates for multiple weeks. The same extends to the big picture in team drills, as full units can get a look at a new system other than their own.
Right now, this is the only Patriots joint practice on the books. It’s also just a solo practice, rather than the two teams sometimes do leading up to a preseason game. Reiss wrote back in early May that “word is that Mayo prefers just a single practice, in part to limit fighting that can sometimes become prevalent on a second day.” Such fighting was an issue for the Patriots two years ago when fights led to injuries for both teams.
The Patriots’ other two preseason games this year are home against the Carolina Panthers in Week 1 and at the Washington Commanders in Week 3. There’s been no reporting about joint practices ahead of either of those games to this point.
The Patriots training camp schedule will be announced in full later this summer. For the last two years all 32 NFL teams have started training camp on the same day, usually in the last week of July.
