Zolak & Bertrand: Reacting to Hunter Henry returning to the Patriots
On Friday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, the crew reacted to Hunter Henry re-signing with the Patriots on a 3-year deal.
This is being proactive…
Scott Zolak: Jerod Mayo talked about it. Team leader. When Jerod took over, Hunter Henry offensive team leader. He’s one of the few, him and David Andrews. That’s about it. I’d also put Rhamondre’s (Stevenson) name in there.
Marc Bertrand: So his last contract was 3 years and $37 million. Was it Phil (Perry) who was saying the other day that he had talked to some people in the league at the combine, and they believed that Hunter Henry was in line to take a pay cut from his last deal? That he wasn’t going to be able to earn that kind of money again, given that he’s three years older and that the production playing here in this offense had been down a little bit.
Ryan Johnston: I kind of wonder, though, just because there was nothing between him and free agency but a few more days. So to keep him from getting to free agency to get to the market, you’d usually have to overpay a little bit.
Marc Bertrand: Like what premium was paid for that? It’s a good question. It’s the right question and if he’s signing a deal now, I think that tells you he really wants to be here and they should value that right now. Typically, who cares if a guy wants to be there or not, but they should want him here number one. He’s a captain and they need some continuity and they need good players and he’s a good player. So this is good. This is a good sign for them. It’s great. I don’t know what the money is, so we can’t tell you if it’s a good deal bad deal whatever. But I’m happy that he’s signing here and I’m happy that they’re keeping him.
Scott Zolak: That’s great.
Marc Bertrand: He was going to be probably the best tight end out there.
Scott Zolak: With (Dalton) Schultz off the board, he was number one on the lists.
Marc Bertrand: He was going to be the best tight end to hit free agency in a couple of days.
Scott Zolak: Then you can risk losing him with some crazy contract. This is good. It’s proactive. Tells you they’re serious, and, let’s keep it going. Let’s get (Mike) Onwenu done before Monday.
