NYI’s 3rd round pick in 2024 Draft & Chicago’s 5th pick in 2025 Draft
Caps retain 50%

For the Bruins, this micro-saga shows that they’re sniffing around the market for a left-shot defenseman. They still have until the trade deadline passes at 3 p.m. ET on Friday to make a move.
The Boston Bruins may be jumping in on the action ahead of the NHL trade deadline.
One of the latest reports to come out on Boston involves a possible trade for a veteran defenseman. Let’s keep an eye on Washington and veteran Joel Edmundson. The big left shot Dman has a number of clubs circling. Toronto, Tampa Bay and Boston to name a few. As of late last night, the Bruins seemed to have the inside track. See how the morning unfolds.
— Darren Dreger (@DarrenDreger) March 7, 2024" rel="noopener" target="_blank">According to top insider Darren Dreger, as of Wednesday night, the Bruins “seemed to have the inside track” on acquiring blue liner Joel Edmundson from the Washington Capitals.

However, the B’s are not without competition. Dreger prefaced his Bruins report by saying there are “a number of clubs circling” on Edmundson, including the Maple Leafs and Lightning. Boston has no first, second, or third-round pick in the 2024 draft, so it may prove difficult to outbid other suitors. But based on Dreger’s read on the situation, the Bruins are in the lead. Edmundson, a complementary defensive defenseman, ultimately shouldn’t command too high of a price.

Despite that, the 30-year-old Edmunson would fill an immediate need for the Bruins. A 6-foot-5 left shot, Edmundson would bring physical shutdown qualities in his own end. He’d be an asset for a Bruins team that has long needed a left-shot D-man who’s particularly adept at clearing bodies away from the front of his own net.
Edmundson’s playing style would carry extra value in the playoffs, as the Bruins learned the hard way when they went up against him as a member of the St. Louis Blues in the 2019 Stanley Cup Final. As the B’s adjust to life without Lindholm, who’s missing time with an undisclosed injury, they could especially use a player like Edmundson, so it’s no surprise they’re reportedly targeting him in a trade.

NHL trade market explodes two days before deadline
The 2024 NHL trade deadline may not be for another two days, but Wednesday afternoon saw multiple buyers decide to make their move to the market and pull the trigger on their move.
For players on the move (and there was more than a few of ’em), it was probably a welcomed sight instead of getting hit with another “trade-related benching.” And for teams making moves, striking early undoubtedly alleviates the pressure of having to play the waiting game between now and Friday’s 3 p.m. deadline in pursuit of the best price possible.

And in what’s been a continuation of early market trends, it appears that the Western Conference is where this year’s arms race is happening. That was already the case this deadline season — Elias Lindholm went to Vancouver, Chris Tanev went to Dallas, and Anthony Mantha moved to Vegas prior to today’s rush — but Wednesday only saw that further intensify, with three trades involving top-tier teams out West (two from Colorado and one from the Oilers).
