Which quarterbacks are passing on throwing at the NFL Combine
For those hoping to see the top quarterbacks take part in testing and on-field drills at this week’s NFL Combine, you may need to tamper those expectations. Two of the top passers are opting out of those workouts.
On Sunday night, NFL Network reported that USC’s Caleb Williams and LSU’s Jayden Daniels won’t take part in drills this week at the Combine. Both players will be in Indianapolis to meet with teams, but won’t do any on-field work.

It’s not very uncommon for quarterbacks projected to go at the top of the draft to skip workouts. Last year, consensus top pick Bryce Young didn’t take part in Combine drills. Like Young last year, Williams and Daniels are expected to work out for teams at their respective pro days next month. USC’s Pro Day is set for March 20, while LSU’s is a week later on March 27.
While Williams and Daniels are now confirmed to not be throwing, NFL Network also reported three quarterbacks who will take part in on-field drills this week. That group is made up of Michael Penix from Washington, Bo Nix from Oregon, and J.J. McCarthy from Michigan. All three are projected top 40 picks.
That leaves UNC’s Drake Maye as the lone quarterback who has not yet publicly decided how he will handle this week. Maye enters Combine week widely viewed as either QB2 or QB3 in this draft, flip-flopping with Daniels. A good performance on the field this week, with Daniels not throwing, could solidify his spot as QB2. At the same time, he could decide it’s not worth risking a bad workout or injury and sit out along with Daniels and Williams, knowing he’s still likely locked in as a top-five pick.
Maye will have a few days to make that decision. Quarterback workouts this week won’t be held until Saturday. Here’s a look at other storylines to watch this week…
