The New England Patriots’ coaching search has taken on a noticeable pattern in the last few days. That pattern centers around another organization – the Green Bay Packers.
It started with the hire of offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, who was with the Packers from 2012 to 2017 as a running backs coach and then a quarterbacks coach. The team has also been linked to Ben McAdoo, who was with the Packers from 2006 to 2011 as a tight ends then quarterbacks coach. Both worked under current Patriots director of scouting Eliot Wolf, who held various front office roles with the Packers from 2004 to 2017, a tenure that saw him reach the director of football operations position.

On Monday, the Patriots added another former Packers staffer to their interview list. According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, the team has spoken with former Green Bay defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery about the defensive line coaching job. That position was opened when DeMarcus Covington was promoted to defensive coordinator.
Montgomery, 44, spent the first 12 years of his coaching career at the college level before joining the Packers as a ‘defensive front assistant’ in 2015. Three years later he was promoted to defensive line coach, then had ‘running game coordinator’ added to his title in 2022. The Packers officially parted ways with him this past weekend, as they rebuild their defensive coaching staff under new defensive coordinator – and former Boston College head coach – Jeff Hafley.
Defensive line coach isn’t the only spot the Patriots will need to fill on defense. Steve Belichick took a job with the University of Washington on Sunday, officially opening up the linebackers coach job. As for cornerback and safety coach, there’s been no news one way or the other on the statuses of Mike Pellegrino or Brian Belichick.
Patriots coaching staff tracker: Building out the staff
With Jerod Mayo’s introduction in the books, the New England Patriots’ next step is to build out his coaching staff for 2024. That begins with the coordinators, with the Patriots interviewing candidates for all three positions – offense, defense, and special teams. They’ll also have to hire positional coaches once those coordinators are decided.
In 2024, the Patriots will be on their fourth offensive coordinator in four years. When Josh McDaniels left after the 2021 season the team went without an officially-titled coordinator in 2022, with former defensive coach Matt Patricia handling the bulk of the play-calling responsibilities that year. Last year the Patriots brought in Bill O’Brien to replace Patricia, but O’Brien ended up being one-and-done in New England – he Sources: Ohio State is set to hire longtime NFL head coach Bill O’Brien as the school’s new offensive coordinator. The Patriots haven’t had an officially titled defensive coordinator since Patricia held the job from 2012-2017. Those responsibilities went to Brian Flores in 2018, then were split between Mayo and Steve Belichick from 2019 to 2023.
On special teams, the Patriots haven’t officially parted ways with either coordinator Cam Achord and assistant head coach Joe Judge, who worked almost exclusively with the unit last year. However, the fact they’re taking interviews at the position means those two likely won’t be kept on Mayo’s staff.
So, who will be coming in to take these jobs on the new Patriots coaching staff? Here’s a look at the confirmed interviews for each position, which will be updated as more news comes in…
