Joe Mazzulla: Bucks coaching drama a ‘trigger for perspective’
The NBA coaching carousel was spinning this week, as the Milwaukee Bucks moved on from head coach Adrian Griffin after 43 games. Zolak & Bertrand were joined by Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla, who weighed in on how the coaching profession in the NBA can be uncertain at times, even with a measure of success:
Beetle: Another situation has unfolded in the conference this week. Mike Budenholzer was fired in Milwaukee after the season last year. Just a couple of years removed from winning a title. And then at 30-13, they fired their coach again. Is that a reminder of how ruthless the league can be, and how the coaching profession can be difficult to, sort of keep your job in?
Mazzulla: “I mean, it’s definitely a trigger for perspective. I think just kind of understanding that, you know what we stepped into, the job that we have, is difficult. There are high expectations and high standards. But to me, I take a look at it. And regardless of situation, the coaching profession is hard. It’s a tough situation. But the last 48 hours since that’s happened, I’ve kind of looked at it from a different perspective and looked even more grateful. I’ve talked about this before. Just the alignment that the Celtics have between ownership, between front office, between coaches, between players. You know, things aren’t always perfect. We obviously haven’t achieved what we, the ultimate goal of winning a championship. But we do have ultimate alignment, where there’s communication and the standard and the expectations are the same. So, that’s something to really focus on, in my opinion, and grateful to have that.”
