Jim Harbaugh Named Chargers Coach
The Los Angeles Chargers have made a splash hiring Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh has agreed to a five-year deal with the Chargers, sources told ESPN. The Chargers went 5-12 last season and fired coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco on December 15, following a 63-21 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 15. Harbaugh played for the Chargers back in 1999 and returns to the NFL sidelines where he spent four years as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. He was 44-19-1 during his time there, with three NFC Championship Game appearances and a Super Bowl appearance. When Harbaugh took over the 49ers, he was rebuilding a team which had missed the playoffs for eight straight seasons.
Harbaugh has flirted with the NFL the last few seasons turning down jobs with the Vikings and the Broncos. He now joins a Chargers team led by quarterback Justin Herbert. He leaves Michigan after winning the National Championship over Washington. After nine years at Michigan, Jim Harbaugh’s time as head coach at his alma mater is over. He finished with a record 89-45 and is the first coach since Tom Osborne to leave his team after winning the National Championship.
There are still openings around the NFL but the Chargers may have been the most attractive. Harbaugh will have to battle the Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs each season. While the Broncos and Raiders will have new quarterbacks next season. When it comes to Michigan, they should be able to replace Harbaugh with Sherrone Moore. Moore was the interim coach when Harbaugh served a suspension last season. Of the 4 teams in the college football playoff, 3 will have new head coaches heading into next season.
The remaining job openings are in Atlanta, Carolina, Seattle and Washington. One destination is filled for Bill Belichick. Where will the legendary coach end up?
