The football world was hit with the news in less than 24 hours or 3 coaches who are hall of gamers are no longer with their teams. It started with a shocker that Pete Carroll will no longer be the head coach in Seattle. Hours later, Alabama head coach Nick Saban announced his retirement after 17 seasons with the tide. We have reports for weeks the same would happen to Bill Belichick and around 7:00am on Thursday morning it was reported the Patriots and Bill Belichick will mutually part ways. These are 3 of the greatest coaches of all time, all in their early 70’s.

The successor for each team will have big shoes to fill. I’m intrigued what happens with each. I think Dan Quinn ends up with Seattle after multiple stints as defensive coordinator. The Alabama job may be one of the best in sports and they can have their pick of former coordinators or even Washington coach Kalen DeBoer. In New England, most are looking for a change. The early favorite is Jerod Mayo who had always been linked as the successor to Belichick, maybe just a year sooner than anticipated.

After 24 years and a 4-13 finish to the season you would think the Kraft's would do a thorough search and listen to different football minds on the new direction of the teams. Also, consider the least of free agent coaches available.

NFL Coaches available for hire

Jim Harbaugh
Nick Saban
Pete Carroll* (Under Contract)
Mike Vrabel
Brian Flores
Ben Johnson
Eric Bienemy
Bill Belichick

This might be the best free agent class in coaching history. So why stick with someone internal who’s never coached before? Because he was promised the job? This would be the perfect time to start new. Start with a GM who would then hire the coach they wanted. There are plenty of Candidates the Patriots could bring in because they are comfortable with them. This is the time to be uncomfortable. Take the time to get it right. Especially with the free agent coaches that are available
