Patriots offensive lineman officially done for the season
The Patriots will be shorthanded on the offensive line for the rest of the year. On Monday the team placed starting left guard Cole Strange on IR, officially ending his 2024 season.
Strange suffered a knee injury during the first half of the Patriots’ 27-17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. He was carted off the field, and wasn’t spotted in the locker room after the game.

The Patriots’ first-round pick in 2022, Strange previously missed four of the first six games of the season due to an unrelated knee injury he suffered in training camp. In total Strange played in and started 10 games this season, after starting all 17 last season.
Prior to getting hurt Strange was playing some of the best football of his career. In his first seven games this season he allowed multiple pressures in each, but allowed just two total over the last three games, without being called for any penalties.
Speaking with the media on Monday, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick credited Strange’s improvement over the course of the year. “The more he’s been able to stay on the field, the better he’s gotten,” Belichick said. “I think he’s played better through the more recent weeks of the season. He missed quite a bit of time there early in the year in training camp, which slowed him down. But, I think he’s been playing his best football lately.”
With Strange out, the Patriots are likely to turn to rookie Atonio Mafi at left guard. Mafi finished the game in that spot for Strange on Sunday, and played when Strange was out early in the season. A fifth-round pick last spring, Mafi has appeared in all 14 games for the Patriots this year, making four starts.
Strange’s spot on the 53-man roster will go to quarterback Nathan Rourke. The Patriots claimed Rourke off waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier on Monday.
