Beetle: Out on Malik Cunningham as Mac Jones’ Replacement
On Friday’s edition of Zolak and Bertrand, Marc Bertrand explained why he is completely out on Malik Cunningham being Mac Jones‘ replacement as the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots.
Message to the team if Cunningham starts…
Beetle: Well, it’s Malik Cunningham. Get lost with this. I’m so out on that idea, I’m even out on Will Grier right now.
Zolak: I mean, even Bill, like, I brought up Will Grier’s name on all access. He’s like, “you understand he’s been running cards, like you’ve done it”. “You understand what that is.” You don’t have reps. He has not repped anything. So where do you think Malik Cunningham is in the pecking order? He’s probably playing reciever.
Beetle: You know what kind of message that sends to the rest of your team when you do something like this? That means no one should take anything seriously anymore..
Beetle: You’ve had a backup quarterback all year on this roster except for one game where you mismanage the roster and you end up with Malik Cunningham on the game day roster, right? Because you can’t manage your roster properly. So, you’ve had a backup all year in Bailey Zappe even though you cut him right before the thing began. You’ve had Bailey Zappe. That means you’re benching your quarterback. You got to go to Zappe. If Zappe then plays and doesn’t play well, then you go to the next guy, right? Okay. And at that point, you could choose between Malik Cunningham and Grier. I agree with what he’s saying. He said Mac is much better than Zappe, that Zappe is obviously worse.
Zolak: Not now he isn’t.
Beetle: I would say Mac with his mistakes, and where he is at mentally, is not that far from where Zappe is on his best day. I agree, Zappe is not the quarterback that Mac is.
