A hint that Kayshon Boutte will be back on the field this Sunday?
One of the biggest unknowns surrounding the New England Patriots’ offense this season has been the usage (or lack thereof) of rookie wide receiver Kayshon Boutte. After playing 55 snaps in the opener – when he failed to record a catch on four targets including a play late in the game that saw him unable to get a second foot down in bounds – Boutte has been a healthy scratch for the last seven games. That’s come as the team has seen shake up at the wide receiver position, including the promotion of Jalen Reagor from the practice squad to active roster.
No clear reason has been reported for Boutte being a healthy scratch for most of those seven weeks. The most popular theory though has been that he’s simply not showing the coaches enough in practice to earn playing time on gamedays. As the Patriots get ready to face the Washington Commanders this Sunday though, that may be changing.

With Kendrick Bourne now on IR and DeVante Parker unlikely to play after suffering a concussion last week against Miami, the Patriots’ wide receiver depth has been in the spotlight this week. Needing bodies at the position, Boutte’s role was again a popular topic heading into Sunday’s game. Given that, on Friday Bill Belichick was asked how Boutte has done in practice this week and offered an encouraging answer.
“I think this has probably been his best week [of practice],” Belichick said. “Performance, consistency, assignments, production. Practice is practice but – there are opportunities out there for everybody. You take advantage of them or don’t take advantage of them.”
This seems like a good indication Boutte will play at least some role this week, rotating with Reagor and Tyquan Thornton in the third wide receiver spot along with JuJu Smith-Schuster and Demario Douglas. If he doesn’t, it probably means the mystery the issues that are keeping him out of the lineup go beyond the practice field.
