Felger has a trade deadline question for Bill Belichick
The NFL trade deadline will take place on Halloween in 2023 and the New England Patriots are in an interesting spot ahead of the deadline. On Monday’s Felger and Mazz, Felger wanted to know if head coach Bill Belichick has any say in what happens at the deadline for the Patriots.
Felger wants to ask Bill Belichick a question….
Felger: Do you even think he’s running the trade deadline anymore?
Mazz: I don’t know.
Felger: It’s time for, and I’m not getting on the guys down there who ask him questions because I think for, you know, for the most part, Bill’s getting his feet held to the fire by the guys down there from Reiss, and Curran, and Phil Perry for sure is all the way up his ass, and Bedard and all these guys, they’re asking the right questions. I’m not digging on the, but I think it is time….Here’s a suggestion, and it’s to the point where today would have been a good day for it, I feel like jumping on the conference call and asking it myself, it’s been a while since we’ve asked Bill this question. But we did ask him at one time I was there. I might have even asked it. And it was in the year 2000 when he first got here and people forget, when he first got here he was not the czar of everything. I think around the draft or after he might not have even been involved in the first draft, I can’t remember. Because usually the scouting staffs turnover after the draft. But there was some ambiguity about just how much power Bill had. “Did you have final say?” And again it might even have been me, but someone asked him early in that year, in 2000, do you have final control? Do you have final say? Because it’s a big thing. It was coming off the Parcells and, you know, Parcells wanted it didn’t have it. Pete Carroll wanted it, didn’t have it and complained about it on the way out the door. So, Bill, they’re going to make you cook the dinner. Are they going to let you buy the groceries we asked him about? And he gave a non-answer, which led me to believe he didn’t have full control when he got here. I think when he first got here he did not have full control. It still was collaborative. So I think we’re about due for that question again. “Bill, do you have final say on this stuff or is that the personnel department?”
