Offensive lineman placed on IR as Patriots activate two players from reserve lists
Ahead of Sunday afternoon’s game against the Buffalo Bills the New England Patriots made a series of roster moves. Those moves included placing their biggest offensive line acquisition of the offseason on IR.
As first reported by ESPN’s Mike Reiss, offensive lineman Riley Reiff was placed on IR due to a knee injury. Reiff hadn’t practiced this week and was already ruled out for Sunday’s game.

This is the second time this season Reiff has been placed on IR. The first came following initial roster cuts, after he suffered a knee injury in the preseason finale. Reiff then returned two weeks ago, and appeared in the Saints game before suffering his current injury. Head coach Bill Belichick confirmed that the two injuries are different (as in, this isn’t a case of Reiff reaggravating his preseason injury).
Reiff is eligible to return from IR a second time, once the four-week window passes. However, he’d count a second time against the eight total IR returns each team is allowed over the course of a season.
The Patriots used the third of those activations on Saturday in a corresponding roster move. Cornerback Jack Jones, who was placed on IR in Week 1 due to a hamstring injury he suffered in practice, was added to the active roster. He joins wide receiver Tyquan Thornton and Reiff as the three players who have been activated from IR.
In addition to Jones, the Patriots also added special teamer Cody Davis to the active roster from PUP. Davis hasn’t played since suffering a serious knee injury just over a year ago. The Patriots had an open roster spot for Davis, following the release of rookie cornerback Ameer Speed earlier this week.
Reiss also reported the Patriots’ two practice squad elevations this week, with wide receiver Jalen Reagor and defensive tackle Trysten Hill getting the call. This is the third and final elevation for Reagor this season – if the Patriots want him to play beyond this, they’ll have to sign him to the active roster. For Hill, it’s his first elevation after being signed to the Patriots’ practice squad the first week in October.
