Felger & Mazz on the Boston Celtics and their fans being too positive
The Boston Celtics held an introductory press conference on Wednesday afternoon for Jrue Holiday and the mood in the press conference was very upbeat and happy. On Thursday’s Felger and Mazz, the guys gave their thoughts on how things are always a bit to positive for the Boston Celtics and their fans.
Felger & Mazz on the positivity of Celtics fans….
Felger: I’m talking to the franchise, I’m talking to you kids out there and this is for your own good….try and keep it in your pants just a little bit. The way you all get so far ahead of yourselves, it doesn’t help.
Mazz: This is when they get into trouble.
Felger: It doesn’t help. It’s too positive. It’s too much. I mean, you could tell they’ve already jumped ahead three steps. So Jrue Holiday came in and they had a good first practice where we saw a little something. And I can tell, this is what’s going to be if they win a championship, the stories are going to be written and they’ll go back and they’ll ask Wyc Grousbeck, and they’ll ask Brad Stevens, and they’ll ask the players, and they will say “we could tell the first practice. The first practice that Jrue Holiday stepped onto the floor he sort of changed our mindset. He stuffed Jaylen Brown. He took on one of our assistant coaches in the shell drill”, whatever the hell that is. And it’s like I’ll write the story for you. But the problem with the Celtics and the fans and the whole thing is you start there! Like you’re already writing that story. It was one practice! One drill! Listen to these guys.

Mazz: And again, this is when they get into trouble. This has been the problem with this whole group. Go right back to the beginning, they jumped into what was a pretty good environment for two very high picks. You know, they didn’t suck then, they were a playoff team out of the gate, and they started talking about winning five or six titles. Meanwhile, here we are five years down the road and they still haven’t won their first. So like, this is exactly when they get into trouble. They are never as good as they think they are.
Felger: Oh my God. Do you ever hear, like, “one day at a time” or “we’ll see” or “we’ve got a lot to prove”. Instead, it’s just this…they love the player and they should, he’s a great add. But okay, they love the player, they’re on this high because they landed the player and he came in and had a good practice and it they saw a little something and they just can’t contain themselves. And the media play like “hey, Brad like oh look at you”, and everyone, there’s just just euphoria, like the endorphins for the shell drill on day one. It’s like, guys, everybody, you’d be better served to have a little cynicism, to maybe look under the dark side of it, look at it critically, and then if it works out, you feel even better. But you have to start on this plane of giddiness. That is just like no other team in town.
