ESPN’s Mike Reiss: Mac Jones a ‘good quarterback’, but confidence ‘shaken’ after disappointing game
During his weekly segment with Toucher & Rich, ESPN’s Mike Reiss expressed his belief in Mac Jones as a good quarterback but admits that his confidence in Jones took a hit after this game. He points out that mistakes like a bad quarterback sneak and three turnovers were the key factors that caused the game to get away from them, attributing them to Jones.
“I think Mac is a good quarterback. If you go back to 24 hours before the game, I picked him as a player I thought was going to keep them in this game because he was going inside. I thought he was a better indoor quarterback than an outdoor quarterback. I was wrong. This is the first game for me from where I look at it, where I think confidence in him is a little shaken.”
In Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, Mac Jones was replaced by Bailey Zappe in the third quarter. When he was benched, Jones had completed only 12 out of 21 passes and had thrown two interceptions. The score was heavily in favor of Dallas at 31-3, and the final score ended up being 38-3, indicating that the switch to Zappe didn’t improve things much.

One significant problem highlighted during the game was Jones’s struggle when facing pressure. In the first half, he faced pressure on 10 out of 18 dropbacks, a ridiculously high 56 percent. This underscores a problem that Jones has not been able to overcome – he has difficulty performing well under pressure, and the Patriots were hoping for more progress in this area.
Reiss and the guys also discussed a specific play involving a failed attempt to pick up a first down using the new pushing rules. Reiss analyzes the play, suggesting that the hurry and pace of the game, along with potential alignment issues, might have contributed to the failure. He even questions whether Bill Belichick should have called a timeout to settle the situation.
