Greg Bedard: 10 questions from around the NFL after week 2
Greg Bedard of BostonSportsJournal.com joined the Felger and Mazz program on Tuesday following the New England Patriots loss to the Miami Dolphins. While on, Bedard did his weekly “10 Questions” segment following week 2 of the 2023 NFL season.
10 Questions Transcript:
Felger: What did you make of Kenny Chesney ringing the bell? How do you feel about that whole new thing?
Greg Bedard: So this is just going to be Kraft servicing himself every week. Is that we’re doing here? Okay, great.
Felger: Elton John next. Meek Mill the week after.
Mazz: That’s exactly what crossed my mind. I wanted to vomit. Can we at least have, like, New Englanders or Bostonians?
Greg Bedard: Hog Hannah? Steve Grogan? Somebody!
Mazz: Oh, good. Even better. Former Patriots. Perfect.
Felger: No, no, no. Robert’s fancy friends are going to ring the bell up there.
Jim Murray: You’ll eventually get to them. That’s the thing. It’s a massive dropoff from Brady to this corny dork. But you should go through Patriots greats before you get to rich friends of Robert.
Felger: No, no, no. We’re going to see just how important Robert is and how cool his friends are. That’s why that thing is up there. That’s why you build a schmenzer to show everybody your schmenzer That’s the whole point.
Greg Bedard: I want Goodell.
Felger: Oh, he’s coming. He’ll be next. If you could take one player off the Jets roster and give him to the Patriots, who would it be?
Greg Bedard: In the Patriots current state? No question, Garrett Wilson.
Mazz: Garrett Wilson.
Jim Murray: It’s Garrett Wilson. Yeah.
Mazz: Although I did think about one of their tackles. I can’t lie. It crossed my mind.
Greg Bedard: They suck too.
Felger: Becton’s no good?
Greg Bedard: He’s good. He just can’t stay on the field.
Mazz: They get Dwayne Brown don’t they?
Greg Bedard: He stinks, too. He’s hurt all the time?
Felger: We’ll stick with Garrett Wilson next…Who’s the most fraudulent 2-0 team in the league?
Greg Bedard: Falcons. At least Washington has a defense. Desmond Ridder is a terrible quarterback.
Mazz: Atlanta. It is. As much as I’m reluctant to say it because I told you I thought Atlanta is going to win that division but it’s by default because the division stinks.
Jim Murray: Same division, but it’s the Saints. They’ve won their two games by a combined four points and it was against the Titans at home and that suck bag Panthers team with a rookie quarterback.
Greg Bedard: By the way you know the Saints are coming in here, I think it’s ten straight games they’ve given up less than 20 points on defense.
Mazz: Well, that’ll go well with this offense. Better fix the line by then,
Felger: Who’s the best 0-2 team in the league?
Greg Bedard: Bengals.
Mazz: Yeah, Cincinnati. Unless Burrow’s hurt, then the whole thing changes.
Jim Murray: It’s the Chargers. Their losses have been by a combined five points and they’ve lost mostly because their defense can’t hang on to a lead. And it sucks.
Felger: Give me a preseason take or prediction you had that hasn’t aged well through two weeks?
Greg Bedard: The Jets going to the playoffs, of course with Rodgers.
Mazz: I thought Cleveland was going to suck and their defense is pretty good. I mean there’s talent on that team. The Browns are going to be better than I thought.
Jim Murray: The Bengals in the Super Bowl. I don’t see it. Joe Burrow’s not right. He’s not right with that ankle injury. He’s skittish against the Blitz. And that division’s too tough. I figured they’d be the one seed and it ain’t looking that way right now.
Felger: Mine was how prolific the Pittsburgh Steelers offense was going to be, how it’s already passed you. And I watched them play football and they might be one of the few offenses that’s actually worse than you. And they do have the talent. Pickett I guess we don’t know, Greg I know you’ve talked about it in the past, that stinkin offense they run is a freaking joke. What is it? What are they doing there?
Greg Bedard: I don’t know. I couldn’t believe that Mike Tomlin brought Matt Canada back. It’s so gimmicky. If you think the Patriots offense is bad, that’s worse.
Felger: Oh, it is worse.
Mazz: I thought they turned it over to Patricia and Judge.
Felger: It is worse. I thought they were ready to light it up. They blow on offense. So that hasn’t aged well….Next…Give me your list of the biggest toolbag back quarterbacks of your lifetime and stop when you get to Zach Wilson.
Felger: I know Jim Murray’s going to kill me on this because this is sort of his expertise, tool bag quarterbacks, I have Ryan Leaf, Johnny Manziel, Derek Carr, that fraud, and Zach Wilson.
Felger: You’re missing one.
Mazz: Jeff George, Jay Cutler, Ryan Leaf, Zach Wilson.
Jim Murray: He makes the Mount Rushmore. It’s Jamarcus Russell, Ryan Leaf, and then Zach Wilson.
Felger: Yeah. So Cutler was a tool bag over a decade.
Mazz: Oh yeah. No, no. He was special.
Mazz: It was a reign of tool bagerie. Zach Wilson’s just scratching the surface. He’s got to stay in the league and be this much of an A-hole for ten years. And then he reaches Jay Cutler. I think Jay Cutler is the the top of Mount Rushmore.
Mazz: I’m telling you, Jeff George, Jay Cutler and Zach Wilson all have something in common.
Greg Bedard: I don’t think Jeff George was a toolbag. I think he was just an A-hole.
Mazz: Massive tool. Massive, massive tool. And they all had great arms.
Jim Murray: I factor in the play on the field. I mean, he made the playoffs before. These other guys are all terrible.
Mazz: Meathead. Idiot.
Felger: Speaking of toolbag quarterbacks, what do you make of Aaron Rodgers intimating he could return this year from his ruptured Achilles?
Greg Bedard: No way. Plus, they’re not even going to be in the playoffs. So I don’t know what he’s rushing back for.
Mazz: This year. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Good luck. Let me know when you get the boot off in February.
Jim Murray: That’s right. The Jets are going to be way out of it by the time he’d be healthy. So they’ll still be here next year. We’ll see ya in 2024.
Felger: Don’t you think he’s just saying it to hopefully have those players in the locker room keep some faith. Something to play for?…Next…Who should be the starting quarterback for the Jets right now? Who should Who should be the guy?
Greg Bedard: Should be Tom Brady. But in reality, Gardner Minshew. I love Gardner Minshew. He was great this weekend for the Colts. Delivered a victory. I wanted him here instead of Cam Newton. Why doesn’t somebody give Gardner Minshew a real chance?
Mazz: I’m going to pick someone realistic. Matt Ryan. It should be Matt Ryan. Matt Ryan should be the quarterback of the Jets.
Jim Murray: It should be Tom Brady. That ownership thing still hasn’t even gone through. So it’s Brady.
Felger: Tom Brady is the answer. Next…If you’re a Browns fan, should you be frightened with the way Deshaun Watson has looked?
Greg Bedard: Yes, he’s been terrible. And it now sort of enhances Bill O’Brien’s resume. I mean, he got Deshaun Watson to play at a All-Pro level. Remember when he came in here with the Texans and the Patriots had no clue how to defend him. I don’t know, Stefanski can’t figure out how to use him. O’Brien could.
Mazz: Yeah, you should be concerned. Absolutely. They got big money sunk into the position, and if their quarterback play doesn’t improve, they’re still in the same spot.
Jim Murray: No, you should be depressed because it’s over with this guy. I can’t believe it. And as I put the email you guys this morning, I figured being away from football and not getting hit for two years, you’d come back fresher and still alright. It’s like he’s never played the position. Bad footwork, he’s inaccurate, he’s slower, he’s dumber, terrible decision making and the other thing, he’s lost his mind. When’s the last time you’ve ever seen two facemask penalties against a quarterback in one game? Like so he’s lost his mind off the field, but on it too? That thing’s done. It’s over.
Felger: That’s it. Done.
Jim Murray: I think he looks like garbage.
Felger: Last one. What Coach across the league needs to be fired right now. And are there any more than one? Is it a list of two or three or just one? Who?
Greg Bedard: Brandon Staley. No question to me. I mean, he has the most talented quarterback in the league. I love Justin Herbert and he’s supposed to be a defensive genius and his defense is 32nd in yards and 30th in points. And you know what I discovered researching Brandon Staley, his record to this point in his third season, is 19-17, including 0-2 this year. Bill Belichick over the same point? 18-18.
Mazz: Which brings us to the second name on the list. Bill Belichick.
Felger: Right now?
Mazz: Yes. Why are you surprised? I said I would fire him three years ago.
Felger: Right now?
Mazz: Yeah. Out. Bye. Done. See ya later.
Jim Murray: Same answer as Mazz. Is this going to get better? It’s not. So he’s got to go.
Mazz: It should have already happened. The only reason doesn’t happen is because of that stupid record.
Felger: Shouldn’t it have happened three years ago, Mazz?
Mazz: Okay, two.
Felger: After the Cam Newton year?
Jim Murray: In retrospect, yes.
Greg Bedard: Yes. Kraft should have said, “Tom, what do you want? “And if he said, I want Bill gone, I want Josh to be head coach.
Felger: No, no, no. Four years ago. So I’m sorry I’m just confusing the years. When Brady was walking out the door that’s fine. That’s fair.
Greg Bedard: In hindsight now, Kraft should have been like, “Tom, whatever you want. Who do you want? As coach? You can do whatever you want. whatever.”
Felger: Fine.
Mazz: Okay, I’ll tell you what, I’ll even build in the cushion because Bill is Bill. Last year was a firable offense.
Felger: You bet. So do it now. Do it today on the off day?
Mazz: Sure. Yeah, I’m okay with it.
Jim Murray: Yeah, I’m for it. Same answer. Staley and Belichick out.
Mazz: What, I’m going to cry?
Jim Murray: Save the season.
Felger: Okay. There you go.
Mazz: Turn it over to Mayo and O’Brien.
