What Albert Breer is hearing about the Patriots plan at backup QB
Albert Breer of The MMQB joined Zolak & Bertrand on Wednesday and shared the latest on what he’s hearing about the Patriots plan at backup quarterback in the wake of Bailey Zappe’s release from the team on Tuesday:
Why did the Patriots move on from Bailey Zappe?
“I think what they figured out this summer was he does not fit the conventional NFL offense like they thought he might. He didn’t look very good and it didn’t look very good in practice. He didn’t look very good in games. And as of right now, I think they feel like they can do better at that number two [quarterback] spot, which is a full on roster spot. So could he be back on the roster as a backup? Maybe. I don’t think it’s their first choice right now. I think their first choice would be to have a veteran on the team backing up Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe.”
What should the Patriots do at backup QB now?
“Case Keenum has played for Bill O’Brien before. It was brief, but he did play for him in Houston, and started a game for him in Houston, so that’ll be one name. Now, Nick Caserio has said they’re happy with their quarterback room and they kept him on the roster for a reason down there. You know, like one of the reasons you keep a guy like that in the roster is you’ve got a rookie quarterback and C.J. Stroud. You think he can be a resource to him. So could you pry Case Keenum from there? That would be an option.
“Colt McCoy is another one who has background in the system. His he actually, when he came into the league was with Eric Mangini and Brian Daboll. So he’s actually run the offense before. And I know this will probably give people a shakes a little bit but he played for Joe Judge in New York. So there is a background there as well. And I do think that there’s some value in that. I know like everybody looks at this like you’re just going to put the best 53 players on your roster at every position. There’s different things that go into different positions, and I don’t think it’s the worst idea in the world to put a resource for Mac Jones in that quarterback room. A guy who’s been in the league for a long time. I’ve talked to enough quarterbacks who when they were young, had somebody like that in the room that really helped them. Cam Newton. There’s a reason why Derek Anderson was on the roster for as long as he was. Chad Henne was incredible for Patrick Mahomes. The last few years, Case Keenum was with Josh Allen. Josh Allen spoke very highly of Case Keenum. So I do think there’s an opportunity here to give Mac Jones a resource and I almost I’d almost equate it to like a golfer having a great caddie, you know, like a guy who’s out there on the course with them who can give him the lay of the land, who’s another voice and has experience. I think there is an opportunity to do something like that for Mac Jones with this spot.”
