Scott Zolak: Ezekiel Elliott signing is about helping the offensive line

On Tuesday's edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Scott Zolak explained what the Ezekiel Elliot signing is all about.

Scott Zolak: I think he's brought in to block. Honestly, I think your offensive line has so many issues, he's going to be a scan back for you. You're going to get his ass up and running and he's going to understand every protection and he's going to be a third down back.

Marc Bertrand: That's sad. Oh, we had to bring in Ezekiel Elliott because we know we can't block. It's because of a poorly constructed roster on offense.

Hardy: The numbers in terms of what you can project both players at, Ezekiel Elliott and Damien Harris are about the same. They are about the same. You know what Damien Harris is making with the Bills? $1.7 million, $600,000 signing bonus and a million guaranteed. Why didn't you just do that?

Marc Bertrand: I don't know. I don't know why they couldn't bring themselves to just do that. I don't know why That's what they decided to do.

Hardy: Welcome to town, Ezekiel. I don't dislike him. We all have, you know, fond memories of watching him. This is about the organization and the personnel. This is about, Beetle as you said, the ill-preparedness of of the team. How can you be this ill-prepared? You see what you have. You know who left and you know what you need to do. It is just a microcosm of like the (Tom) Brady thing all over again. You didn't see this coming? You don't have a list of players hanging on your refrigerator saying, oh crap, wait a second, we're going to need this, this, and this.

Scott Zolak: It's not that we didn't see this coming. I mean, this is not what they do. Like, we we get other guys names that they're USFL or XFL guys or maybe Canadian football players. You bring them in for an opportunity. This goes to show you what they feel about their lineup front. We've got issues. I'm waiting for that first day when all five are at practice together.

Marc Bertrand: Can it also speak to they don't believe in the other running backs on the depth chart.

Each year during Patriots training camp, there's a name or two that absolutely pops or gets a ton of hype from the fanbase. Sometimes the buzz from the fanbase comes from shining during practice or preseason games, other times it's about what the player did elsewhere.

Last week on Zolak & Bertrand, the crew laughed at the hype some guys get for shining during this time of the year, because usually it means close to nothing. Very rarely does the 3rd-string QB have any chance of opening eyes, nevermind earning a roster spot.

This list won't includes the likes of Jimmy Garoppolo or Jarrett Stidham. It's more about the guys that didn't make it out of camp or failed to ever have a prominent role on the 53-man roster.

It's a lot harder to make the same impression some of these guys did now, especially with one less preseason game. But there's already a ton of hype surrounding the likes of Demario Douglas and trying to figure out a way to keep Trace McSorely on the Patriots.

So here's some darlings you might've forgot over the years....

It's crazy to think about how much hype Tim Tebow's name carried in the early 2010s, thanks to his ridiculous run with the Broncos when they advanced past the Steelers in the 2011 AFC Wild Card game. For years, Bill Belichick couldn't help himself from praising Tebow's character and the way he played the game of football. Unfortunately, things didn't end up working out with the Patriots, as he got cut after throwing for 145 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions over 3 preseason games.

Heading into the 2014-2015 season, everyone was watching Jimmy Garoppolo to see if he'd be the successor to Tom Brady, and he ended up forming quite the connection with Brian Tyms. It all started in the first game against the Washington Commanders when he caught 5 passes for 119 yards and a TD. He even ended up making the 53-man roster, as he appeared in 11 regular season games and ended up catching a touchdown from Tom Brady against the Bills.

Danny Etling was a 7th-round pick by the Patriots in the 2018 Draft and he made his name known during the final preseason game against the Giants. He broke off an 86-yard touchdown to seal the win as time winded down in the 4th quarter. It led to Etling sticking around for a year on the practice squad, before the Patriots cut ties with him.

Similar to everybody waiting for Tom Brady's successor, Austin Carr felt into the same category when it came to being the next Julian Edelman. It didn't help when he had one of the stronger preseasons of any player in the NFL, racking up 14 catches for 153 yards and 2 touchdowns. Still, it wasn't enough as he was waived by the Patriots and picked up by the Saints ahead of the regular season.

Eric Decker was always one of those players in the NFL that felt like a natural fit for the Patriots. He didn't get a chance with the organization until it was the final stop of his career, as he signed a 1-year deal worth $1.9 MM that could reach up to $2.5 MM. Ultimately, he retired at the end of August as his chances of making the roster seemed low due to an unimpressive camp.

Undrafted punter Corey Bojorquez made some noise in the early days of training camp in 2018, thanks to a big leg that had beat writers dropping hang times on the timeline every day. It was believed the Patriots never let him into a preseason game, with the hopes they could sneak him onto the practice squad as a future replacement for Ryan Allen. Instead, he was claimed off waivers by the Bills and has had a stint with a handful of teams in the NFL.

Despite Tom Brady and Demaryius Thomas being good friends off the field, Thomas and the Patriots couldn't make it work in New England. Thomas had a big preseason finale, securing seven catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns, but was waived before the regular season started. He was then re-signed a few days later, listed as an inactive in Week 1, then shipped off to the Jets ahead of Week 2.
