Murray: Keion White was the best player on the football field last night
The New England Patriots fell to the Houston Texans 20-9 in their preseason opener on Thursday night. One of the lone bright spots in the loss for the Patriots was rookie defensive end, Keion White. On Friday’s Felger and Mazz, Jim Murray and Joe Murray gave their thoughts on White’s performance in the loss.
Jim Murray: Keion White. You can’t teach that kind of shiftyness and speed. I’m a big believer that you can’t teach mean and you just look at Keion White and he looks pissed and I like that. And he played everywhere and showed versatility last night. And even if he’s going to end up playing in more of a Belichick system and he’s not going to be racking up a million sacks, if he’s going to look the way he did last night, and even if he’s only playing on third downs as a specific pass rusher, but that’s going to open up opportunities for other guys.

Joe Murray: So I thought he was the best player on the football field last night on both sides of the field. He was absolutely outstanding. Nobody could stop him. I understand that it was against backups, but when you look like that, you’re good. I don’t care if it’s the second and third stringers, if you look like that, you’re good. But the biggest thing is, that’s a guy that’s going to get pressure from the defensive line and that’s Bill Belichick specialty. If he doesn’t have to use certain defenses to get Josh Uche at the quarterback or even Matthew Judon in one on ones, if they can find a way to get pressure from their defensive line that’s outstanding. I don’t think he’s going to start by any means, like I still think they’re going to like their regular set with Deatrich Wise on the outside and maybe Lawrence Guy at times at end. But when it’s third and six, maybe even third and five situations and passing downs, I want Keion White on the edge.
Jim Murray: Agreed. I think he’s going to probably be like a third down specialist probably to start.
Joe Murray: I think he’s going to be a pure down lineman maybe to start. Just to keep it simple for him. I heard Ted and Matt talking about potentially a Willie McGinest type, I’m not going there yet, but could he be that next defensive end? Can he hold the end like that and attack the rusher and be in the backfield consistently? We saw at every play last night. They threw different things at him. They threw two guys at him. The one thing I love about it, it’s that fast off the line, all arms and push. That’s just brute strength from that man. I don’t even know if we saw his actual talent last night, but last night we saw his speed, we saw his strength and man, if they’re going to have certain coverages where they want to attack the quarterback, he’s going to be on the football field.
