Heading into their preseason opener on Thursday night, the Patriots will have a completely full roster. This is after filling their two open roster spots over the last two days.
In their latest signing Wednesday afternoon, the Patriots added linebacker Joe Giles-Harris to their roster, via the league wire. The details of the contract were not immediately made available.

Giles-Harris, 26, is entering his fifth NFL season. A 2019 UDFA out of Duke, he spent his first two pro seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and then his last two seasons with the Bills. In those four years he’s played a total of 17 games, playing mainly on special teams. Last year, the 6-foot-2, 240-pound linebacker appeared in just one game for Buffalo.
Currently, the Patriots have tremendous depth both at the linebacker position and in terms of dedicated special teams players. Given that, Giles Harris will likely be competing for a practice squad spot as training camp shifts to joint practices next week.

Prior to signing with the Patriots, Giles-Harris was in Foxborough for a free agent workout during the day on Wednesday. The Patriots hosted three other linebackers as well – Dillon Doyle, Frank Ginda, and Tyreek Maddox.
With Giles-Harris signed, the Patriots’ roster is once again at 90 players. Giles-Harris is their second addition of the week, after they signed veteran linebacker Trey Flowers for a second stint with the team on Tuesday.
Just because the Patriots’ roster is back at 90 players though, don’t expect them to be done making moves. They were already at the 90-player limit earlier in camp, then did some roster shuffling to open up the two spots they just filled. One position to watch would be running back, where the Patriots have hosted multiple players for visits in recent weeks.

Patriots training camp notebook: More encouraging signs for the offense on Day 12
The New England Patriots’ second block of training camp practices wrapped up on Tuesday. In a fully-padded practice, the team finished up preparations for Thursday’s preseason opener against the Houston Texans.
As was the case on Monday, the day featured mostly scout-team reps for both the offense and defense, with one side going off of ‘cards.’ That means that rather than running the Patriots’ playbook the other side was looking at a play drawn up on a piece of paper – or card – resembling the Texans’ system. This is how teams practice in the regular season to get ready for opponents.

With that period, we may have gained some insight into which projected starters will and won’t play on Thursday. As the majority of the projected offensive starters worked against the scout team, a group of players worked separately on a side field. That group included Mac Jones, DeVante Parker, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Hunter Henry, and Rhamondre Stevenson. Given those players were limited in their game prep, it’s possible the team doesn’t plan on them playing on Thursday.
This would also line up with something that was said after practice. While Bill Belichick said before practice the team was “still working on” who will play and who won’t on Thursday, starting defensive lineman Deatrich Wise told reporters before practice that although he would like to play, he’s not expecting to.
While select starters weren’t on the field as much during those scout team drills, they still got chances to take competitive reps later in practice. Let’s turn to that as we continue working our way through Day 12…
