Patriots immediately make roster move with Trey Flowers after signing him

The New England Patriots have officially agreed to a reunion with Trey Flowers, but it appears the veteran defensive end needs more time before returning to the field.
Flowers will instead go straight to the physically unable to perform list (PUP), as reported by Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network. This means that Flowers cannot yet take part in football activities, but can otherwise be with the team. He can be activated from PUP at any time, but could not be placed back on the list once that happens.

Originally a fourth-round pick of the Patriots in 2015, and a two-time Super Bowl champion in 2016 and 2018, Flowers spent the 2022 season with the Miami Dolphins. Flowers, 29, was active for just four games, then placed on injured reserve with a foot injury in Week 7. He stayed there the rest of the season.
Flowers last played with the Patriots in 2018. He played three seasons with the Detroit Lions after signing a big free-agent deal there, then joined Miami after being released and hitting the open market in 2022.

Flowers is currently wearing No. 58 for the Patriots, but was not present at practice on Tuesday. This transaction would explain that. The Pats and Flowers have flirted with a reunion before, and now it’s a reality. He will be afforded every opportunity to pick it back up where he left off five years ago, but he’s going to need to be healthy and available.

Patriots training camp notebook: More encouraging signs for the offense on Day 12
The New England Patriots’ second block of training camp practices wrapped up on Tuesday. In a fully-padded practice, the team finished up preparations for Thursday’s preseason opener against the Houston Texans.
As was the case on Monday, the day featured mostly scout-team reps for both the offense and defense, with one side going off of ‘cards.’ That means that rather than running the Patriots’ playbook the other side was looking at a play drawn up on a piece of paper – or card – resembling the Texans’ system. This is how teams practice in the regular season to get ready for opponents.

With that period, we may have gained some insight into which projected starters will and won’t play on Thursday. As the majority of the projected offensive starters worked against the scout team, a group of players worked separately on a side field. That group included Mac Jones, DeVante Parker, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Hunter Henry, and Rhamondre Stevenson. Given those players were limited in their game prep, it’s possible the team doesn’t plan on them playing on Thursday.
This would also line up with something that was said after practice. While Bill Belichick said before practice the team was “still working on” who will play and who won’t on Thursday, starting defensive lineman Deatrich Wise told reporters before practice that although he would like to play, he’s not expecting to.
While select starters weren’t on the field as much during those scout team drills, they still got chances to take competitive reps later in practice. Let’s turn to that as we continue working our way through Day 12…
