‘Seagull Cinderella’, the controversial busty bird sculpture, is making a return to New Bedford
In our world today, not even statues are safe from controversy! Take the infamous Seagull Cinderella statue in New Bedford, Massachusetts. This unique artwork, featuring a woman with a seagull head, was intended to symbolize female empowerment when it was generously donated to the city back in 2016.
However, it sparked quite a ruckus among some individuals who found it too “sexually suggestive.” What followed was the creation of a petition demanding the removal of the statue, arguing that it shouldn’t leave a lasting impression on New Bedford.
In an attempt to address the concerns, the artist, Donna Dodson, made adjustments by giving Seagull Cinderella a “daisy bikini” and “full skirt” to cover up the once-nude figure. But despite the changes, the uproar continues.
The eight-foot sculpture had been proudly displayed in Dodson’s Massachusetts backyard without issue, even serving as a handy geographical landmark for locals. It had been also travelled to various waterside locations, including Provincetown and the shores of Lake Michigan.
Opinions on the artwork are divided among the locals. While some appreciate its empowering message, others simply want it gone, replaced with something they deem “beautiful.” It’s like a modern-day fairy tale clash between artistic expression and sensitive sensibilities.
City officials stand firmly by the seagull-inspired statue, urging it to remain in place. So, the drama continues, and we can’t help but wonder, will Seagull Cinderella eventually fly away or continue perching in her controversial spot along Route 18? Only time will tell!
On another note, from July 13 to the end of October 2023, the Seaport Art Walk invites visitors to explore a collection of artworks showcased both outdoors along the waterfront and, for the first time, indoors at Groundwork in the Quest Center.
