Dorchester Native Bruce Brown Wants To Bring The NBA Trophy To His Hometown

DENVER, COLORADO - JUNE 12: The Denver Nuggets celebrate with the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy after a 94-89 victory against the Miami Heat in Game Five of the 2023 NBA Finals to win the NBA Championship at Ball Arena on June 12, 2023 in Denver, Colorado. On Monday night, the Denver Nuggets defeated the Miami Heat in game five of the NBA finals. Amidst the post-game celebration, forward Bruce Brown told Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe that he wants to bring the NBA trophy to his hometown of Dorchester, Massachusetts. “Bruce Brown just told me he’s going to try to bring the Larry O’Brien Trophy back to Dorchester for a visit, so young kids see what can happen when you dream,” Washburn tweeted.

From MA to Miami to the NBA

Brown was born in Boston and grew up in Dorchester. He started his high school career playing for Wakefield Memorial High School before transferring to the Vermont Academy. He went on to play college ball at the University of Miami. After two seasons, he declared for the NBA draft.

The Detroit Pistons selected Brown with the 42nd pick (2nd round) of the 2018 draft. Eventually, he would be traded to the Brooklyn Nets in 2022. After two moderately successful seasons in Brooklyn, Brown would sign with Denver.

Brown served as a backup small forward and shooting guard this season with the Nuggets. He played 28 minutes in the NBA finals deciding game. Furthermore, Brown led all bench scoring with 10 points. In addition, he grabbed six rebounds, had one assist, and one steal.

Back to Boston

NBC Boston shared the following quote from a 2019 interview Brown did. “When they say I’m from Boston, it just makes me feel better,” Brown told The Boston Globe in 2019. “I just want that to be known that that’s where I’m from. That’s where I was raised and I don’t want that to change.”

We’ll see if Bruce Brown gets the opportunity to bring the NBA trophy back to Dorchester this summer. Typically, each player on the championship roster is given a chance to show off the hardware. The fact that Brown wants to inspire youth in his hometown to keep working towards their dreams, makes it all the more meaningful.
