The Boston Celtics blew a late lead in the fourth quarter to fall to the Miami Heat Tuesday night at Miami-Dade Arena by a 98-95 final.
Boston led by seven points with 8:29 remaining in the game, then Miami closed the game on an 18-8 run. At one point, the C’s missed 10 field goal attempts in a row. On top of going cold offensively, they also committed three turnovers in the final seven minutes of regulation.
Two of those turnovers were errant pass attempts by Jayson Tatum. The Celtics superstar finished with 31 points and 14 rebounds, but scored only three on 1-of-4 shooting in the fourth quarter, and threw the ball away with 1:20 left and again with 1.2 seconds left. Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla is also facing scrutiny for not calling a timeout from 5:44 until the final possession.
The Celtics had previously closed the second quarter strong to take a 58-50 lead to halftime, then led by as many as 13 points in the third quarter and 10 in the fourth. But they came up woefully short in crunch time, and this time they couldn’t hold on.
