On Wednesday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Beetle expressed his frustration with the New England Patriots coaching staff continuing to get respect from different outlets because of Bill Belichick and former head coaches currently on the coaching staff.
Zo: You’d have a better view if Matt Patricia was brought back and handed the defense?
Beetle: Yes! How obvious of a point is that? Holy crap. He’s not here to coach defense. He’s coaching the offense, an offense he’s never coached. Positions he’s never coached. Are you kidding me? Yeah, I’d have a much different view of Matt Patricia as defensive coordinator right now. Yeah, that’d feel okay. I could see that. You’d have a clear cut guy too.
Matt Patricia being on the defensive side of the ball right now, would eliminate the issues that we talked about last year that started to leak out with people on the staff talking in the offseason, as Andrew Callahan reported in the Herald about how there was communication issues in that meeting room because no one knew who the hell the boss was. And that still exists, by the way. That’s still a problem here in 2022.
No, there are guys who are not good head coaches that can still be decent coordinators. Matt Patricia wasn’t a bad defensive coordinator. He just wasn’t the best defensive coordinator. But he’s not coaching defense. If Joe Judge were back as special teams coach, I’d be thrilled. In fact, I suggested that at the start of the offseason. We talked about that on this very show, when I said they should fire Cam Achord if they can get they can get Joe Judge back as their special teams coach. He was good when he coached special teams. That’s where his coaching experience is. That’s where his resume was built, coaching special teams.
