On Friday's edition of Felger & Mazz, Felger had one takeaway from the Patriots first preseason game and it was that the coaching was going to "submarine" this offense and lead to a step back in Mac Jones second season.

Felger: If they still had Josh McDaniels or they had Bill O'Brien in here, and I might even accept like a lesser one of those Belichick staffers who's, you know, (Jerry) Schuplinski, who is a former quarterback coach or (Chad) O'Shea. If they had one of those guys in here and they had added DeVante Parker and they were running their offense, I'd say playoff team. So am I putting too much in the coaching?

Jim Murray: No Mike, because they were a playoff team last year and if they did that, there would at least be some continuity you could point at and say, okay, this is a guy that has been in this system, he's been part of this offense, they're not really changing anything. This is a complete upheaval and you've never seen anything like it.

Felger: I think the coaching is going to submarine the thing. And look, I think they got worse on defense. I don't know exactly what I'd be, you know, if they had Josh McDaniels here or Bill O'Brien and it was status quo on the offense and just taking another step with DeVante Parker, I'd say they'll be better on offense. They've taken a step back on defense. They're going to be better on offense. Mac Jones really has a chance to flourish. There could be a little bit better. But, you know, I mean, like, that's what I think would be my analysis of the team. But I feel like they're you know, they're taking a step back here to take a step forward and more suffering through it and you better hope there's a step forward coming down the line.
