New England Patriots

Mac Jones and Brian Hoyer are among the first non-rookies to report to Patriots training camp on Thursday, as reported by Mike Reiss of ESPN.

Along with the quarterbacks are the “rehabbing players,” which likely includes running back James White. White’s 2021 season ended in against the New Orleans Saints in week 3 with a hip injury, and appears to still be working his way back from it.

Slot cornerback Jonathan Jones is returning from off-season shoulder surgery, but was a full participant in minicamp during the spring. Linebackers Cameron McGrone and Raekwon McMillan, meanwhile, both suffered torn ACLs prior to the 2021 season. It’s unclear who is among the rehabbing players who reported to camp on Thursday.

Rookies first reported to camp last Tuesday, and the rest of the veterans need to report by next Tuesday. The first official day of 2022 training camp is set for next Wednesday, July 27.

Patriots sign defensive lineman out of USFL

  • The Patriots added depth to their defensive line ahead of training camp on Tuesday, signing defensive tackle Jeremiah Pharms Jr. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport first reported the signing.

Pharms most recently played for the Pittsburgh Maulers of the new USFL this past spring. He had 22 tackles and two sacks during the 10 game season.

  • Prior to his time in the USFL, Pharms played his first professional season in 2021 with the Wichita Force of the Champions Indoor Football League. He split is college ball between San Joaquin Delta College at the JUCO level, and then NAIA Friends University.

Pharms joins a crowded defensive line group coming into training camp in New England. If he competes for a roster spot, it will likely be for a rotational interior pass rush role behind Christian Barmore. With this move, the Patriots now have 86 players on their 90-man roster.
