Wicked Summer Fun Guide

The July 4th weekend is upon us, and traffic in Boston certainly won’t disappoint (or maybe it will.. you know what, it’s just going to be bad.)

Road Travel

Boston traffic is notoriously bad anyways, we all know that, but the folks at AAA are telling us that the worst time and place to be heading into this weekend is southbound on the Southeast Expressway (I-93) between 2pm and 4pm on Thursday, June 30th, 2022.

Basically, if you’re headed south anywhere on 93 between Purchase Street in Boston, and the Route 24 ramps down in Randolph, you’re going to want to rework your travel schedule to try and avoid July 4th weekend traffic.

“Even with gas hitting record prices, travelers are still eager to hit the road this summer. We expect nationwide travel times to increase about 50% compared to normal. Drivers around major metro areas must be prepared for significantly more delays,” says Bob Pishue, Transportation Analyst, INRIX.

“Knowing when and where congestion will build can help drivers avoid the stress of sitting in traffic. Our advice is to avoid traveling on Thursday and Friday afternoon.”

Air Travel

So that’s road traffic, but what if you’re hitting the airport? Based on AAA’s data, it looks like the busiest time to fly will be Friday, July 1st, while July 4th itself will be the lightest of the Independence Day Weekend.

“The volume of travelers we expect to see over Independence Day is a definite sign that summer travel is kicking into high gear,” said Paula Twidale, senior vice president, AAA Travel.

“Earlier this year, we started seeing the demand for travel increase and it’s not tapering off. People are ready for a break and despite things costing more, they are finding ways to still take that much needed vacation.”

Regardless of where you’re celebrating the birth of America this year, travel experts agree on one thing – be kind and patient. Keep safety at the forefront of your mind as you head out this weekend, and let everyone start their summer vacations safely.
