The top prospect the Boston Red Sox received from the Mookie Betts trade with the Dodgers was called up to the majors on Monday.
Infielder Jeter Downs has yet to play in the major leagues to this point in his career. The 23-year-old has spent the past two seasons with Triple-A Worcester since being acquired.
The prospect hasn’t had much success with his bat, hitting .191 in 2021 and .180 so far in 2022. In his 152 Triple-A games played, Downs has hit 25 home runs with 60 RBIs, also stealing 29 bases.
With Christian Arroyo and Kiké Hernandez temporarily out of the lineup, Downs – who has experience at both shortstop and second base – likely fills in as a depth piece until they can return to the lineup.
The Red Sox next play Monday night against the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park. First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. ET.
