Boston Red Sox

Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story has been the hottest hitter in baseball in recent weeks, and now he’s got the accolades to prove it.

Story was named the American League Player of the Week on Monday, with Miami Marlins starter Sandy Alcántara winning the award in the National League. He batted .360 and blasted six home runs while driving in 14 from May 16-22. Even after the Red Sox’ off day on Monday, Story still leads the majors with five homers and 13 RBIs over the past seven days, and he’s second with a 1.576 OPS.

The Red Sox’ prized off-season addition did most of his damage in a span of two days. He launched three home runs in a win over the Mariners on May 19, then followed that up with a grand slam the next day.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Story became just the third player in MLB history to hit a grand slam the day after hitting three home runs. Sammy Sosa was the last one to accomplish the feat back in 2002, while Jeromy Burnitz was the first to do it in 2001.

It’s no coincidence that the Red Sox have gone as Story’s bat has. They’ve won five in a row and eight of their last 10, dating back to May 13. They’re still 19-22 and 9.5 games behind the first-place Yankees in the American League East, but their recent hot streak has breathed life into a season that for a while felt dead on arrival.
